Features

Span of control measures how many direct reports each manager has. OrgCanvas Business automatically analyzes your entire org chart and highlights managers who may be over- or under-loaded.

How it works

Click the Span of Control button in the right-side toolbar to open the analysis panel. OrgCanvas scans every manager in the chart and calculates their direct report count.

What you'll see

Average span — The mean number of direct reports per manager across the entire chart
Narrowest span — Managers with the fewest direct reports, which may indicate over-layering
Widest span — Managers with the most direct reports, who may be stretched too thin
Distribution chart — A visual breakdown showing how spans are distributed

Using the results

Click any manager in the list to select them on the chart. Use this analysis to identify restructuring opportunities, balance workloads, and prepare for headcount planning conversations.

Tip: Industry benchmarks suggest an optimal span of 5–8 direct reports for most roles, though this varies by function and seniority level.
