Your Excel File → Org Chart in 3 Steps
- Upload your .xlsx file. Drag and drop or click to browse. OrgCanvas reads all sheets in your workbook — pick the one with your team data.
- Confirm column mapping. Our smart importer auto-detects columns: Name, Title, Manager, Department, Email. Review the mapping and adjust if needed (usually it's perfect on the first try).
- Click Import. Your org chart appears instantly, fully laid out with hierarchy, departments, and reporting lines.
The entire process takes under 60 seconds for most files.
Works with Any Excel Layout
Your spreadsheet doesn't need to follow a specific template. OrgCanvas handles:
- Any column order — Name doesn't need to be the first column
- Various column names — "Manager", "Reports To", "Supervisor", "Manager Email" — all recognized
- Separate first/last name columns — automatically combined
- Extra columns — location, phone, employee ID, hire date — imported as metadata, ignored for hierarchy
- Multiple sheets — pick the right one from a dropdown
- Messy data — blank rows, merged cells, and formatting are handled gracefully
Better Than Excel's Built-in SmartArt
Excel has SmartArt for org charts, but it's a drawing tool — you manually type each name into a box. OrgCanvas imports from your data, which is fundamentally different:
- No manual entry: 200 people in your spreadsheet = 200 people in your chart, automatically
- Data stays connected: Edit a title in your spreadsheet, re-import, and the chart updates
- Better layout: Our auto-layout engine produces cleaner, more readable charts than SmartArt
- More features: Dotted lines, departments, photos, sharing links — none available in SmartArt
Keep Using Excel for Data
We're not trying to replace your spreadsheet. Many teams keep their master employee list in Excel and use OrgCanvas as the visualization layer. When data changes, export a fresh CSV/XLSX and re-import. Best of both worlds.
